The Department for Transport (DfT), the Energy Institute at the University of Sheffield and Ricardo are delivering the UK’s SAF Clearing House, working closely with stakeholders and organisations across the industry:
The Department for Transport (DfT)
DfT is committed to the strategic priority of ‘reducing environmental impacts’, as developed through the Transport Decarbonisation Plan. In July 2022, the Department launched the Jet Zero Strategy, which sets out the plan for reaching net zero aviation by 2050. SAF are a key technology for government and industry to achieve this goal. The Low Carbon Fuels team in the Department is responsible for the strategy, policy and regulation driving the uptake of low carbon fuels, including SAF.
The Energy Institute at the University of Sheffield
The UK SAF Clearing House sits under the umbrella of the Energy Innovation Centre (EIC) at the University of Sheffield Energy Institute. The EIC offers partners from industry access to the University of Sheffield’s national pilot-scale laboratories and infrastructure operated by the Energy Institute. These world-class research facilities provide equipment and expertise for academics and industry partners to work together to develop new low and zero-carbon technologies.
Ricardo
Ricardo provides expertise in applying environmental policy into practice; evaluating the environmental performance of products and commercial programmes; and managing high-value grants.
Ricardo’s expertise is gained from advising and supporting the European Commission (EC) and government programmes around the world. Its studies support most of the aviation-related policies proposed by the EC in the ‘Fit for 55’ package, and it also supports many of the major UK airports with their net zero strategies.
